Progression and Enrichment Opportunities
As a Sixth Form we are committed to providing a wide range of progression and enrichment opportunities for our students. We understand the importance of nurturing their talents and interests, and we strive to create a supportive and engaging environment for them to thrive. Our aim at Highams Park Sixth Form is to help students succeed not only in academia but also in developing competencies such as leadership and team work. These skills are essential for entering Higher Education or Employment and therefore we encourage students to get involved in opportunities outside of the classroom as much as their study commitments will allow.
Our dedicated Sixth Form work tirelessly to ensure that every student has access to a variety of extracurricular activities, workshops, and programmes that will help them develop both academically and personally. Students are provided with a 6th Form Bulletin weekly which gives details of a number of ‘super-curricular opportunities’ such as university schemes, taster days and mini courses to help them get into the best university possible. In addition, our 6th Form Bulletin gives details of the different types of apprenticeships that are already open for applications and careers fairs.
We believe that these opportunities play a crucial role in shaping our students into well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the challenges of the future. By participating in these activities, students not only enhance their skills and knowledge but also build valuable relationships with their peers and mentors. We invite you to join us in supporting your child's growth and development at Highams Park School.
Some of the highlights of our Sixth Form enrichment programme can be found below:
- Our Prefect team is made up of students in Year 12 and 13 who wish to make the 6th Form the best place it can be and ensure Student Voice is heard. This not only gives students the opportunities in leadership and working as a team but also in an application and assessment process. The Student Leadership Team meet weekly to discuss ideas and issues in the 6th Form.
- Each year we run a series of 'Sixth Form Success Seminars'. These are super curricular talks that support students in having a growing understanding of different career pathways to enhance their exposure to employers and workplaces. In recent years we have welcomed individuals such as Shaun Wallace from the Chase, Representatives from PwC, the journalist and political speech writer Deepa Shah, and Jacqui Rock as the NHS Commercial Director.
- Our enrichment programme encompasses a range of in school clubs and super curricular opportunities. As a Sixth Form we have a Debating Society who take part in national competitions, a STEM club to support scientific knowledge and enquiry, and a Creative Writing Club. We also have societies for particular pathways to support student destinations. This includes a Medicine and Law Society.
- We have an extensive Personal Development programme that support students understanding of social, cultural, spiritual and moral development. This includes talks from charities such as Drugsline, Minus Cloud Nine and The Money Charity. In addition, we also host careers days and wellbeing mornings to support students.
- As a Sixth Form we have close ties with a range of careers and mentoring groups. This has included students receiving individualised careers mentoring through Zero Gravity and Career Accelerator, work with the TfL Innovate project to establish innovative design ideas and Take the Lead from the Old Vic to support communication skills.
- Our students take part in an extensive number of trips and visits to raise their cultural capital and exposure to the wider world. This has included visits to the Royal Courts of Justice, Old Vic Theatre, Just Eat, Bank of Canada, and Careers Exhibitions and Universities.
