HPS Debate Society

It has been a very busy week for the debate society this week with 3 debate competitions. On Monday, three year 9 students, Abigail McGahon, Cayla Xie and Zoey Tant entered the English Speaking Union Public speaking competition. All three students were very impressive in their roles, and even though they didn't proceed to the second round, felt that they have learnt a lot and want to compete again in this competition next year.

On Tuesday, three year 13 students Oscar Gough-Boyack, Maram Amaraoui and Saeran Ball delivered an impressive and articulate performance in a challenging debate on whether a tourist tax should be introduced. Tasked with arguing against the motion, the trio demonstrated confident public speaking, sharp reasoning, and excellent teamwork.

Maram opened the debate with a compelling speech focusing on the value of cultural exchange. She highlighted how tourism fosters global understanding, enriches communities, and strengthens international relationships—arguing that a tourist tax could discourage exactly the kind of interaction that benefits host nations.

Building on this foundation, Oscar emphasised the practical and economic issues that come with taxing tourism. He explored potential negative impacts on local businesses, visitor numbers, and the wider economy, making a strong case that such a tax could do more harm than good.

Finally, Saeren delivered a powerful closing speech, addressing the equity concerns surrounding a tourist tax. He argued that such a policy could disproportionately affect travellers from lower-income backgrounds and could contribute to making travel a privilege rather than a widely accessible experience.

Their combined efforts were praised by judges, who commended the team’s structure, clarity, and engagement with the topic. With this success, Highams Park Sixth Form now progresses to the next stage of the competition..

The 3rd Competition took place on Thursday at North Chingford Methodist church.

This competition was led by Iain Duncan Smith, the local MP. The four sixth form students involved were Zebedee Hollingsworth, Amber Sermet-Ali, Zayad Sandford and Tamana Mojededi.

The students fought a hard fought debate and were very impressive. Although they didn't proceed to the next round they will be attending the final at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday 27th November. (See picture above of Iain Duncan Smith Debate Competition)
