Welcome to English at Highams Park School.

In Year 7 you will be lucky enough to have 3 lessons of English per week with one dedicated expert teacher guiding you and teaching you for each of those lessons. The lessons are an hour long and will involve a fantastic mix of reading and exploring texts by a wonderful and diverse range of both modern and heritage writers, lots of opportunity for a wide variety of creative thinking and writing and plenty of scope to talk about and share your ideas about all of the characters, stories, topics and issues you come across throughout the year.

Our curriculum asks students to enter into the ongoing conversation of English. This is a conversation that’s been happening for years and will continue to happen into the future. Each year group enters into a particular conversation that continues across all units of study. Our ultimate aim is to encourage students to feel invited into the study of English – they will bring perspectives, viewpoints and experiences that will enrich the conversation. It also encourages students to understand the purpose behind our curriculum choices and to make purposeful connections between different areas of study
