Art

Welcome to Art & Design at Highams Park!

All students in KS3 have a one-hour Art lesson per week in one of our 3 dedicated Art rooms. These rooms are equipped for us to carry out all the practical elements of a student’s Art lessons.

Art is a very exciting subject to be involved with and we teach students Art & Design because it is a language that all people speak. Art will also develop students’ creativity, thinking and communication skills and will enable them to become more reflective learners.

The work you will do in year 7 is….

Baseline test. Undertaken by all students in year 7 to gauge their current understanding and ability in art and to set suitable levels for KS3.

Portraits Project. Working from direct observation of the face, studying proportion and tone in a fun unpressured way. From this, students will quickly move into abstraction and explore the works of Pablo Picasso and how portraits can be used to describe more than our physical appearance.

Cakes & Sweets Project. Students will record from direct observation images of cakes and sweets whilst developing your knowledge of formal drawing and painting skills underpinned by the Formal Elements: Line, Shape, Tone, Texture, Form, Pattern, Colour and Composition. You will also research into the artist Wayne Thiebaut.

The day of the dead. This project looks at the day of the dead festival and the symbolism used to communicate emotions. Students will learn how to analyse an artwork to identify deeper meanings within the work. For this we will look at the work of Frida Kahlo. Lastly, students will create artwork that uses symbolism to represent themselves.
